Greene County Elementary principal Scott Johnson announced Tuesday that on the Iowa school report, which was recently released by the Iowa Department of Education, Greene County Elementary’s score was in the exceptional range. The rating places the school in the top 2 percent of all elementary schools in Iowa.
Johnson said a highlight of the report card is that the achievement gap has closed from 30 percent in 2015 to 10 percent in 2017. The achievement gap refers to lagging achievement of students with disabilities, students who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals, and English language learners.
“We have worked very hard to improve student achievement scores,” Johnson said. He noted that the staff did a book study on “mindset” and continued to grow and improve. The school has implemented professional learning communities (PLCs), developed a system for targeted and consistent interventions with students, and use high quality math and reading programs, according to Johnson.
“This accomplishment was obtained because of the hard work of our fine students and perseverance of our dedicated staff,” Johnson said.
He thanked the teacher leaders and reading specialist Julie Neal for their leadership and guidance. He also thanked parents for being supportive of their children’s education.
